When I became a mom I had to learn to make adjustments in my daily routine and to become more flexible. Those that know me, know that I have a type A personality and a few tendencies of OCD, so I naturally lean towards having a routine and change is sometimes difficult for me. Having children I have definitely become more flexible in controlling the flow of my daily routine and now having two children I'm noticing I'm becoming even more flexible. With both the boys, Chris and I pretty quickly tried to get them on a regular schedule; for example- eating every 3 hours ( as infants), wake time, nap time, then eat, wake, sleep, etc and then a routinely set time for bath and bed. We are both big believers that children need structure in their daily routines and it's our responsibility as parents to provide this structure. I am learning however that as a parent I have to realize that yes, ultimately we as parents are the ones in control of setting this structure but adding a little person into the mix ( and now 2 little people) makes you quickly learn to adjust to what the day brings and things may not always happen at the time you plan for them to happen or the way you plan for that matter. You can only do your best. For example, it seems that just when we are about the leave the house, someone gets a dirty diaper and needs to be changed. Also, sometimes you can't control how quickly a toddler eats his breakfast or how quickly he gets dressed. :) This used to stress me out, especially on a work day when trying to get there on time, but hey I've realized that being a mom is my first priority and this is all part of it. Also, I learned that putting your newborn on a schedule is a little more difficult the second go round because big brother's routine or lack of routine at times, is an influential factor. For me, I've had to learn to sometimes just go with the flow of things, thanks to my boys and I think I am a better mom for it. Sometimes I have to remind myself to just RELAX! Chris helps remind me too.
