R- E-S-P-E-C-T
As parents, we all want our children to be respectful and we try to teach them how to be respectful to us and to others. As Core is becoming more and more knowledgeable these days and more expressive verbally, Chris and I are really trying to teach him the importance of being respectful in both his actions and with the words he uses to communicate. Manners of course are a big part of showing respect.
Some of our examples of our use of manners/ways to be respectful are:
Sayings...
-Yes Mam or Yes Sir; No Mam or No Sir
-Mam? or Sir? ( when Core is asking what we said to him, instead of Huu? or What?)
-Please
-Thank you
-Yes please
-No thank you
-Excuse me
Actions...
-Asking to be excused from the table when he's done eating ( working on this one; it may take a while)
-We do not raise our voice when communicating
-No hitting or kicking - Is this just something you just have to keep telling little 2 year old boys or do girls throught this phase too? Someone please tell me.
-To look at Mommy and Daddy when we are speaking to him
-Listening - We all need to be reminded of this one, with all the preoccupations surrounding us these days.
-Answering Mommy and Daddy when we are asking him questions
-No throwing balls in the house
-Saying the blessing before eating
-Saying our prayers before bed
-Trying to play quietly when baby Graham is sleeping ( good luck with restful sleep Graham)
These are all ways we can be respectful.
I think some of these things are sinking in because the other day when I became frustrated with Core when he was NOT listening to me, I apparently raised my voice. I was quickly reminded of how I needed to be respectful as well when Core said, "Mommy, we do not yell"! Moral of this story is to practice what we preach, right?
Also, Core was throwing one of his play basketballs in the house this morning, and I said, " Core, we do not throw balls in the house!" He said, " Daddy throws balls in the house". So now we know who taught him this one. Thanks Daddy!
