A child's mind is truly amazing! Their neurons are always firing even when we do not think they are and they are constantly soaking up their surroundings. It's amazing to me to see children grow, learn, and develop; I feel like I'm seeing this happening with Core and Graham right in front of eyes from day to day. Yes I say day to day, because I honestly feel like I see new developments daily.
Core has always been a little chatter box, and just within the past couple of weeks he's become more and more articulate. He's now developing more complex sentences when he speaks. The past two times, Core has moved up classes at his school, his new teachers have made comments to me about how they didn't realize how well Core spoke. A child's learning and comprehension of language is largely based on their surroundings and I believe their exposure of learning through books, conversation, human interaction ( both adult and with other children/peers), music, song and interactive play. All of these things help a child learn, each in his or her own way and time.
We have all heard the expression, " Children are sponges". This is so true. Even when you think a child is not paying attention or listening you better think again, because he/she is tuning in at all times. I've learned this because I often hear my or Chris's words coming back to us through Core. Core's speech has really made me more aware of the words I use and how I use them, because he picks it up! This was a quick lesson to me to be careful what i say.
Here are some phases or words that Chris and/or I use that I've recently heard from Core lately...
" Chris"- Core hears me call Daddy by his real name, so occasionally when Core gets upset and
really wants Daddy's attention he says, " CHRIS"!
" Oh my goodness"- a phrase I apparently use very often and didn't even realize it until I heard it
from Core.
" You little turkey"- Chris and i both use this one when referring to Core from time to time, so he got
this one from both of us.
" I love you soooo much"- this is what I tell Core before bed and he's started to say it back the same
way. so cute!
" You've got to be kidding me"- a term I frequently use when I'm frustrated or when something
may happen unexpectedly or surprisingly. Core apparently uses it now too.
" That's awesome"- picked this one up from Daddy.
" Let's go dude"- from Daddy again. Chris really doesn't talk like a surfer dude, although this may
may make it seem like he does. :)
" Dadgumit"- I'm not one to typically curse, so this is my go to phrase and I didn't even realize I
say this until I heard Core say it one day when he got frustrated with me when I
was putting him down for a nap. This made me realize I needed to watch my words, because
little ears were listening at all times.
" Come on people, let's go"- I apparently said this one day when stuck in traffic, when a few fellow
drivers were not cooperating with the traffic signals; then a few days later we were in the car
stopped at a red light when I hear Core say, " Come on people"!
" Night Night, Sleep Tight, Don't let the bedbugs bite"- picked this one up from Chris bc he tells this
to Core when tucking him in for bed.
